WOW: A Pink Baby WIP

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays
Well this is a WIP I'll definitely have to finish in time! One of the women in my beginner's sewing circle is expecting a baby girl. Now they're suddenly interested in quilting for the first time and I'm delighted as it gives me an excuse to introduce them to this art I love so much. Also, I have a huge stash and I love knowing that it's about to be put to use. I've donated my pinks for group use and I think we'll make a quilt, a sleeping bag and some cute accessories like bibs and short little over dresses and a few pram throws too. There's nothing secret about this cot quilt, we're all in it together and I'll show you our progress as the weeks go on.

This beginners sewing circle has been really good for my stash busting aspirations. Instead of shopping at their local Spotlight, these ladies have been shopping via my shelf. They can't believe how much fabric I have amassed. I can't believe it either.

It's hard to let good fabric go so cheaply, but I reason that it will be thrown out when I die and it's better to sell it now and use the proceeds on new project specific fabric that I can actually use in a quilt. It seems that I have so much beautiful fabric and so little of it is ever suitable for what I'm currently doing. In the last few years I've decided that building a stash is a bad idea, I need to free myself of the stash mentality and only buy what I need for what I am currently creating. A tough discipline but one I am determined to master. Eventually.

It's been decided that an apple core pattern is the way to go with this baby quilt and these women have decided that a new baby is the perfect reason to explore quilting. That makes sense. Interestingly, my first ever quilted project was a table runner.

Do you remember your first ever quilting project?

  3. My first quilting project was my senior year of high school. A sweet yellow gingham with alphabet chicken scratch. Instead of quilting I tied the layers and added a satin binding. I also have stash building remorse. It gets easier to sell or give it away as the years go by, as long as I don't have to look at it any more.

  4. Morning Esther, ohhh now I love all that pile of reds and pinks so yummy. My first go at patchwork was to make a sample block because I wanted to use the rotary cutter for dress making I thought it would be a lot quicker than scissors but I could not get it to cut, took it back and the owner of the shop said why don'st ypou join in to days class for patchwork and by the end of the session you will know how to use it???? from that day I was hooked LOL My sample block turned in to a jacket for one of my sons who was doing an art degree at Uni, it was made up of 16 12inch blocks. Yes I said I was hooked; 1 block became 16 LOL He wore and wore it, then took it over seas with him after 18 months of travel some one else liked it just as much and they nicked it????? Minded you it must of been well worn out by then LOL. He recently asked me if I would make him another one like it, he is 40 now LOL Cheers Glenda

  5. My first Quilt ? Oh goodness - that WAS a long time ago! A Pink and White Log Cabin cot quilt made from fabric remnants and sheeting scraps for a textile factory (in Collingwood) to show customers what they could make with their fabric. No neat shelves of pretty fabrics here - it looked more like it was all dumped from a tip truck onto the factory floor and we all pulled bits from the pile.
    It was on display in the shop for years and I often wonder where I would be today quilt-wise had I continued with quilting from that first attempt. - Wendy

  7. You aren't alone Esther. I've been quilting since 1970, first building stash with 1/8 of a yard as that was the smallest they'd cut. I never did buy yardage, or anything just because it was on sale, but I still have stash. I went on the fabric wagon in October of 2001, and only in 2014 did I buy some fabric, for a specific quilt. That addiction is finally cured. Good luck with your stash reduction...what were we thinking? A stash is just another crypt.

  8. Your beginners sewing circle must be great fun. My first quilt was made in ignorance and isolation. It was a Maple leaf appliqué. I did everything wrong, from the fabrics to the thread for quilting. But my family thought it was beautiful so I made another. In the middle of making it I met a gal who came and taught me the basics. I joined a quilt group, the old fashioned kind that put a quilt on a frame and quilted. I was addicted. That was 24 years ago!

  11. What a super idea, your sewing group all working together on these baby projects. Wonderful!
    My first completed quilt, a wall hanging, featured a large sunflower in the centre and I designed it using techniques that I'd learnt from Lynne Edwards second Sampler Quilt book. The grounding that the book gave me has been invaluable!

  12. Sounds like a reasonable way to refresh your stash in a reasonable amount of time. Those pinks and reds are going to make a gorgeous baby quilt. My first quilt was an Double Irish Chain that I made in a continuing education class when I was in college.

  13. I think it's wonderful that you are letting them pick and buy fabrics from your stash....you are so right about what's going to happen to it when we die!
    My first quilt was a simple patchwork made with many types of fabrics...and I just put it onto a blanket and brought that around. Oh how I have learned so much since then!
