BOM 2018: Morning Glory Zig Zag Border on Background

That's better.
This quilt is already looking so good, I can't wait to get it finished and up on my wall. Each step just makes it comes alive. I love every little things about it.

Morning Glory is my current paid BOM. It's an applique and pieced quilt.

  2. If I may ask, what is the rationale behind doing the appliqued border before the applique in the center of the block? I've seen other artists creating the frame before the picture so to speak and was wondering about it.

    1. When you have a frame immediately after a large amount of applique, as in Morning Glory's design, the border becomes a boundary and having this frame correctly in position is critical to the accuracy of the design.

If you put the applique down first, the centre could 'move' to either side of the accurate centre and be 'off' visually. This is why frame down first is such a good idea, it allows you to place the applique down in relationship to the existing frame.

If you created the applique first, there would be a lot of checking and double checking of positioning. Also, for a lot of people, their applique has a habit of growing. If you put the applique down first, that could be disastrous.
